What
is Calcium:
Calcium is the one of the most common mineral
in human body. It is regarded as the ~bone
mineral~. Bone is a continuous growing tissue
which mainly consists of collagen and calcium
phosphates. Collagen is important in the synthesis
of cartilage whereas calcium phosphates plays
significant role in strengthening skeleton and
cartilage. Approximately 99% of the calcium in
the body serves the purpose of fortifying skeleton
and teeth.
Benefits of Calcium:
~ Strengthens the structure of bone and
teeth. It also significantly prevents the reduction
of bone density brought on by ageing
~ Reduces cholesterol level, prevents Alzheimer's
Disease, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases
by reducing the accumulation of aluminum in
the body.
~ Promotes normal function of nervous system
and blood clotting after injuries
~ Promotes muscle contractility and coordination
of heartbeat
Sources of Calcium:
Milk, cheese, green leafy vegetables and etc.
Deficiency in Calcium:
~ Predisposes children to rickets
~ Predisposes adults and elderly to osteoporosis
which is associated to reduction of their bone
density. This increases patient's risk of fracture
which commonly affects patient's femur, hips
as well as the vertebra. As a result, it reduces
their mobility and quality of life. Elderly
and the middle-aged especially the female are
most commonly affected group in this case.
